Older People’s Well-Being in Hampshire –views sought

Posted by kangli on

Four years ago the Older People’s Well-Being team consulted on a strategy for Hampshire to  enable older people to stay independent in their own  homes, with a positive quality of life. Since then the team have been working with public and voluntary organisation partners to focus on the priorities identified.  These include support with garden maintenance across Hampshire and encouraging exercise and activity to sustain both mental and physical health.

To make sure we continue to concentrate on the key issues that are most important we again need the views of as many Hampshire people as possible. We have produced a questionnaire for older people and interested parties to complete to tell us what are their top priorities.

So how can you have your say?

Please simply go to http://www3.hants.gov.uk/bettertime/cx-olderpeoplesstrategy.htm and complete the questionnaires online.

Or if you would like to receive copies to use with others in  community settings then contact Karen.ferris@hants.gov.uk or 01962 832410

Concessionary Fares – what’s your view?

Get your Response Form in now to Hampshire County Council

You may be aware the Government has decided that responsibility for the English National Concessionary Travel Scheme for older people and people with disabilities should move from District Councils to County Councils from the 1 April 2011.

The details of the new scheme are due to be agreed by Hampshire County Council in October 2010.  At the concessionary fares consultation meetings it was clear that the more examples groups or volunteers or clients could give of people who needed

  • help with transport to get to medical appointments
  • help with transport to see friends
  • help with transport to attend lunch clubs

and the reasons why public transport was unable to fulfil these needs, the more evidence those putting together recommendations for County Council Members would have.

The Response Form is available to download here or please contact Kangli Fu Jennings, Information Officer etc if you would like us to send you some copies.  The Forms can be completed by a whole group, or by individual volunteers or by clients.

Moving & Handling Training – September/October 2010

Posted by kangli on July 28, 2010

Letter to all groups

2 August 2010

Dear colleague

Moving & Handling training

I enclose an invitation to our Moving & Handling training which I hope you will encourage as many of your volunteers as possible to attend.  We are holding these sessions in conjunction with the Community Transport Team at Hampshire County Council.  While it is obviously relevant to groups that provide transport and shopping, it will also be useful for Good Neighbours groups providing other tasks and services.

The sessions will provide an introduction to Moving & Handling for volunteers.  The aim is to show that common sense still holds good in the majority of cases – the approach to health and safety is very much at the sensible end of the spectrum.  Moving and handling introduces a few simple guidelines that everyone needs to keep to, whether assisting a passenger or lifting bags of shopping out of a car boot. The training also provides everyone with the opportunity to ask questions about the situations they find themselves in from day to day, whatever their role.

In addition to the training we will allow plenty of time for networking and other items of interest to Good Neighbours volunteers – plus a buffet lunch.

If you would like us to send you more copies of the invitations please let us know.

I look forward to welcoming as many of your volunteers as possible.

With best wishes

Mary Mitchell

Coordinator

Safeguarding: a common sense approach

Posted by kangli on July 1, 2010

The new government has announced its aim to review the Vetting and Barring Scheme (ISA registration).  This was due to start on 26 July 2010 but has been halted to allow the government to remodel the scheme to what it calls ‘common-sense levels’.

However, CRB checks are not affected by this review and should continue as before.

Key date

26 July 2010:  The new-style CRB application forms will start being processed by the Criminal Records Bureau.

To keep you up to date and to clarify the position of the Good Neighbours Support Service, we will be circulating a new CRB pack to all Safeguarding Representatives.

In the meantime, if you need CRB forms or want more information please contact your Area Adviser.
